Claude vs OpenAI Codex: which should you use?

By DevSoftTech · Updated October 2026

Claude and OpenAI Codex are often compared, but they solve slightly different problems. Claude is a family of AI models you can call from your own app. Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent that helps developers write, test and review code.

Where Claude fits. Claude is a strong choice when your product must read long documents, follow detailed instructions, use tools or answer carefully. Features such as tool use, citations, prompt caching and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) help you build chatbots, agents and document tools.

Where Codex fits. Codex is useful while building software: drafting features, writing tests, refactoring old code and reviewing pull requests. It speeds up development, so a project costs less.

Do you have to choose? Not usually. A common setup is to use a coding agent to build faster and a model API inside the product. Models change quickly, so we keep a thin layer in your code that lets you switch providers without a rewrite.

How to decide. Start with the job: a feature inside your product points to a model API, while faster delivery points to a coding agent. Then compare cost, speed, data privacy and answer quality on your own samples. We can run that test for you in a short consulting engagement.
